The #Saidai-ji Eyo #Hadaka #Matsuri or the #NakedMan #Festival in #Okayama in western #Honshu .

The festival takes place on one of the coldest nights of the year. About 9,000 men adorn loin cloths, called #fundoshi , run through a pool of freezing water and battle for the possession of two sacred small sticks i.e. #shingi , in hope that it brings luck for the entire year ... and for bragging rights.

You can check it out on #February 18, 2017

The #Shinto #Kanamara #Matsuri or #Festival of the #Steel #Phallus is held at the #Kanayama #Shrine in #Kawasaki normally on the first Sunday in #April .

The #penis is reflected in candy, lollipops, carved vegetables, decorations, and a mikoshi parade.

The Kanayama Shrine was popular among prostitutes who wished to pray for protection from STD's. Today, the festival has become something of a tourist attraction and is used to raise money for #HIV research.

#Mountain #Roast (Yamayaki) takes place when the grass on #Mount Wakakusa in #Nara is set on fire.

Many believe the #Wakakusa #Yamayaki #fire #festival came out of a dispute between the #Todaiji and #Kofukuji #temples . Others say the fire was about driving off wild animals.

The festival begins with lots of events followed by a ceremonial igniting by members of both temples, a #fireworks display and a #bonfire .

Held on the 4th Saturday of #January each year
